The National Youth Service was established in 1964 by an Act of Parliament and its operations are regulated by among other legislative laws and regulations, The National Youth Service Act chapter 208 Laws of Kenya with the following mandate:-

• Training of the youth citizens to serve the nation, and employment of its members in Tasks of national importance and otherwise in the service of nation.
• Serving with the armed forces during war times in the defence of the nation whether within or outside
