Achievements

  • Sports Policy

The Sessional Paper putting the Sports Policy into operation in 2005.  However, with the enactment of the Sports Bill, the Sports Policy will have the legal backing and framework within which to work.

  • Sports Bill

There has not been any legislative framework for sports.  A draft Sport Bill has been forwarded to the Cabinet for approval and awaits being tabled in Parliament. It will provide the legal framework that will guide the development of sports in the country.

  • Sports Lottery

Out of the realization that Public funds from the Government and a few corporate and individuals cannot provide enough funding for sports, the Ministry has done the legal framework for the formation of a National Sports Lottery aimed at harnessing funds for sports development.  This money will be put into a National Sports Trust Fund from where it will be drawn from time to time to fund sports activities. To this effect, a draft document on sports lottery and national Trust fund forwarded to the cabinet.

  • Cash Award Scheme
The scheme was introduced to award sportsmen and women who excel in international competitions. It has become a big source of inspiration to our athletes who can now expect something in appreciation of their hard work for the nation.

  • Youth Centres

The Department of sports has established Youth Sport Centres for nurturing sports talents. These centres are in various parts of the country.

  • Partnership

“Uwezo wa Kipekee”; this soccer program targeting the youth to help reduction of the spread of HIV AIDS, fight terrorism, training on life skills in Coast Province. The program is a partnership between G.O.K. and US Embassy)

UNICEF girls’ soccer program; this program is in North Eastern, Nairobi and Coast Provinces. The purpose of this program is to develop girls soccer.

  • Participation of teams in international events

The department has been able to present our sports teams in major international sports competitions. Some of these events are;

  1. 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pana, India
  2. 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympics Games where Kenya attained its best performance ever in the games.
  3. arambee stars participated in African Cup of Nations/World Cup qualifiers. They have since qualified for the second round of matches
  4. Harambee Stars participated in CECAFA Football Tournament, Kampala, Uganda where they reached the finals of the tournament.
  5. African Swimming Championship, South Africa. The country was well represented and managed 10 medals overall.

  • Establishment of Community Soccer programme

In an effort to support sports in the country, a Community Soccer programme has been launched. The programme is to be held all over the country in all constituencies and culminate to a final that will have provincial representation for both boys and girls.

  • 35th IAAF World Cross Country in Mombasa

In March 2007 in Mombasa the country hosted the 35th IAAF World Cross Country Championship. The event was successful and it showcased the country’s organizational abilities to the rest of the world, we also emerged the best overall team in the championship.

  • Africa Canoe Kayak Championships

Hosting of Africa Canoe Kayak Championships in Masinga Dam and Sagana – January 2008.

  • Provision of Sports Goods & Equipment

The department has provided sports goods and equipment to Sports Associations e.g. Balls, Wheelchairs, Goal posts and nets, hurdles to provinces, Rowing and Canoe Kayak Boats.

  • Sports programme for vulnerable groups

The department has established sports programmes for vulnerable groups like street soccer for  slum and street children.
